Augmented reality is at or near the peak of the hype curve. Hence it may be useful to review the conditions under which an augmented reality presentation of information leads to a superior user experience. What are the characteristics of searches triggered by stimuli in the environment, such as an interesting object I am looking at, versus searches started by an urge "within" me? What types of extra information enable augmentation? After these general considerations we take a look at the here and now discussing experiences we made with large scale visual mobile search since the launch of Google Goggles. We fuse both lines of reasoning in an outlook of where we would like to take visual search and augmented reality.
