Vision Based Mobile AR - A New User Interface For Mobile Applications?

Michael Gervautz, Managing Director, Qualcomm

Date: Wednesday, April 21

Time: 7:22 - 7:35 PM

Location: Salon E

What if someone is pointing the camera of his mobile phone onto the product flyer of a new TV set and immediately gets information on that TV set such as where it can be bought, what technical features it has or even how it will be mounted on the wall? What if someone is pointing on a facade of a building and gets information when it was built, what restaurants and shops are in this building or what the future plans for that building are? What if someone is pointing at a page of the newspaper and sees videos instead of static images on the pages of the magazine? What if someone is pointing on a game board and is able to play a fantastic virtual game by moving real game pieces? Wouldn't that change the way we are looking into our world completely? How fare are we away from such a fiction? Are today's augmented reality technologies the answer to all these questions?

The talk tries to answer some of these questions by giving many examples out of practical experiences from the last years of working in the field of mobile augmented reality using the technology in various research and commercial projects.
